JBOD vs. RAID: What’s the Difference?
Both JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) and RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) are storage solutions that involve multiple physical drives. While RAID often gets more attention, JBOD still holds a place in certain storage setups due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness.
What is JBOD?
Unlike RAID, JBOD simply refers to a collection of drives with no inherent redundancy. You can use JBOD in two ways:
- Individual Volumes: Each disk in the array functions as a separate volume.
- Concatenation: Drives can be spanned together to form one large volume.

Advantages of JBOD
- Cost-Effective: JBOD arrays are typically cheaper than RAID arrays due to the lower cost of controllers.
- Full Capacity Utilization: JBOD doesn’t require the duplication of data like RAID. So, all the space on each drive is available for storage. For example, a JBOD with four 300GB drives offers 1.2TB of usable storage.
- Flexibility: JBOD arrays allow you to mix and match different disk sizes, making them adaptable to your storage needs.
Disadvantages of JBOD
- No Redundancy: If a single disk fails, the data stored on that disk is lost, including data on other disks in the array. Unlike RAID, where redundancy protects data.
- Slower Read/Write Speeds: JBOD doesn’t have the performance benefits of RAID. While RAID can distribute data across multiple disks for faster access, JBOD stores all data on one disk at a time.
- Less Efficient for Critical Data: Since JBOD lacks redundancy, it’s not suitable for storing critical or sensitive data without a reliable backup.
When is JBOD Useful?
JBOD is ideal when you need to store a large volume of non-critical or temporary data. It’s a simple and cost-effective solution for bulk storage. However, it’s crucial to have an adequate backup strategy in place, as JBOD doesn’t offer data protection.
JBOD might not be the right fit for everyone, especially those requiring faster speeds or data redundancy. However, for non-critical storage, it remains an affordable choice.
